Outdoor Lighting for Your Paver Patio: Why It's the Detail That Changes Everything

There's a moment on every project we complete that we love — the first time a client sees their new patio at night with the lighting on. Every time, without fail, the reaction is the same: they had no idea it would look like that. Outdoor lighting transforms a space in a way that photographs barely capture. It takes a beautiful patio and turns it into something that feels genuinely magical after dark.

At No Pressure Contracting, we incorporate outdoor lighting into our hardscape designs across Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, and beyond. Here's everything you need to know about what it involves, what it costs, and why it's almost always worth it.

The Different Types of Outdoor Patio Lighting

Not all outdoor lighting is the same, and different applications serve different purposes. Here's a breakdown of the most common options we install:

  • Step and riser lighting — Low-profile LEDs built into paver steps or retaining wall faces. Subtle, elegant, and essential for safety on multi-level spaces.

  • Path and border lighting — Low-voltage fixtures installed along walkway edges or patio borders. Defines the space and guides movement through the yard naturally.

  • Uplighting — Fixtures installed at ground level pointing upward at trees, architectural features, or the home's facade. Creates dramatic visual depth and makes the whole property look professionally designed.

  • In-paver lighting — LED fixtures installed flush with the paver surface, often used in driveways, steps, or as accent points within a patio. Clean, modern, and stunning.

  • String and overhead lighting — Warm bistro-style lights strung over a patio or pergola. The most popular option for outdoor entertaining spaces and one of the most cost-effective ways to add ambiance.

  • Fire feature lighting — Combining a gas fire pit with surrounding landscape lighting creates a layered effect that makes the space feel like an outdoor resort.

Why Installing During Your Hardscape Project Saves Money

The best time to install outdoor lighting is during your paver installation — not after. Running conduit for low-voltage wiring is significantly easier (and cheaper) when the ground is already excavated for base preparation. Retrofitting lighting into a finished hardscape means cutting into pavers, disturbing joint sand, and patching — all avoidable costs if lighting is incorporated from the start.

This is why we always have the lighting conversation during the design phase of every project. Even if a client is on the fence, we rough in the conduit so the option is there without a costly retrofit later.

Low-Voltage vs. Line-Voltage Lighting

Most landscape and patio lighting systems run on low-voltage (12V) systems controlled by a transformer. They're energy-efficient, safe to handle, easy to expand, and the standard for residential hardscape applications. Line-voltage systems (120V) are used for certain applications — like in-ground uplights near pools — but require licensed electrician involvement. We coordinate with trusted electrical partners when line-voltage work is needed.

What Outdoor Lighting Actually Costs

A basic low-voltage lighting package for a patio — step lights, border lighting, and a transformer — typically runs $1,500–$4,000 installed depending on the number of fixtures and complexity. A more comprehensive system with uplighting, in-paver accents, and smart controls can run $5,000–$10,000+. Like everything else, the cost scales with scope — but the impact-to-investment ratio on outdoor lighting is consistently one of the highest of any hardscape add-on.

See It for Yourself
